February 2005

We lost our beloved Casey (our beautiful Cocker Spaniel) in February 2003.  Our first feelings after our loss were that we could never have another dog.  Well, how wrong we were!  A lot has changed since we lost Casey as you can see in our picture.  We now own 4 precious Maltese furbabies!  Corky (top middle) was our first Maltese who we just adored; we purchased him at a pet store in July of 1999.  His nickname is “Pumpkin Head”.  He was the first Maltese we ever owned who stole our hearts with the love he gives and his great personality!  When we lost our Casey I never wanted to go on a vacation because of my fear of leaving Corky by himself.  It took me a year after Casey’s death to get excited about bringing another dog into the house and of course, we decided it had to be a Maltese.  A lot of our co-workers had adopted pets through local shelters and we decided we would adopt a Maltese and started our search through Pet-Finder.  Through Pet-Finder I discovered the wonderful Northcentral Maltese Rescue, Inc.
Sophie (AKA Twinkle, right) was our first adoption.  We adopted her on February 28, 2004 at 6 years of age.  She is the sweetest little thing, just full of love!  We’ve nicknamed her the “Love Bug” because she just loves to sit on your lap to cuddle and give you kisses.  You would never know that Sophie is a puppy mill survivor … she adapted so well to us from the moment we brought her home.  She wasn’t afraid of hugs and kisses from us … she thrived on them.  She and Corky bonded immediately and get along so well together.  They play with each other every day.  It’s hard to explain how great it felt to adopt a puppy mill dog and shower her with love and ordinary things that made her life so much better.  Adopting Sophie was a truly amazing experience for us.  She is our little angel!
Charlie (AKA Lyle, left) was our second adoption about 2 months later.  We adopted him on April 17, 2004 at 5 years of age.  There was something about Charlie’s picture on Northcentral Maltese Rescue’s website telling me to adopt this special boy.  During his foster care it was discovered he had Epilepsy and needed daily medication to alleviate his seizures.  This is a very easy illness to handle with medication.  Charlie has had 2 seizures since we adopted him, which we handled without any problems along with the help of our amazing Vet.  He is such a good little boy!  We’ve nick-named him “Charlie Bear” because he is 12 pounds of love with big paws.  He also is a puppy mill survivor.  Charlie had a hard time with affection but now enjoys it immensely and he especially loves his belly rubbed. He is very good with the other dogs and loves to play with each of them on occasion.  He is also very good to our cats…he loves to sniff them but mostly just leaves them alone.  Just recently he discovered the pillows on our bed.  He now loves to snuggle on top of a pillow and sleep.  It’s so nice to see him discovering pleasurable things that he didn’t have at the puppy mill.  Every time I take his picture he has a big smile on his face!  What a cutie he is!  He is our special boy!
Our third adoption was Abby (right), six months later.  We adopted her on October 16, 2004 at 3 years of age.  I just had to have Abby because of her size…she was only 5 pounds.  Corky is 9 pounds, Sophie is 8 pounds and Charlie is 12 pounds.  I wanted a tiny Maltese and Abby fit the bill.  She has become very attached to John and he nicknamed her “Dabby Do.”  She is our little noisemaker.  She lovers to persistently bark when you first get home…you can tell she is trying to tell you something.  As soon as one of us picks her up she stops barking … so we do know she’s barking for our attention and we love to give it to her!  She had a hard time letting us hug and kiss her in the beginning.  Every time we went to give her a kiss you could tell we were scaring her so we took things slowly.  Today she is just fine and enjoys lots of hugs and kisses.  She also loves to cuddle up next to you.  She and Sophie bonded immediately and are best friends always lying next to each other.  She is our little sweet pea!
There is no better companion in the world than a Maltese rescue dog!  Their loyalty and devotion will leave permanent paw prints in your heart forever.  Thank you Northcentral Maltese Rescue for all the wonderful work you do, and the joy you bring into all of our lives by letting us have these gifts of fur.  We are truly thankful for the 3 furbabies you allowed us to adopt through your agency.  Each one of them has given us so much joy in very different ways!  We couldn’t imagine life without our four furbabies!

LuLu, too!
UPDATE: John and I really can't believe we have five maltese dogs, but we do! We adopted our fifth one, LuLu, on November 16, 2005.  Every week since I adopted our first maltese, Sophie, from Northcentral Maltese Rescue, I take a look at your website to see how many dogs are in need of a good home and sometimes see one that's been on the website for a long period of time and then I feel sorry for the poor little thing and want to
adopt him or her.  Sometimes I can talk myself out of calling Mary, but
this time I could not.  I called about a boy who had been up for a long time, but Mary indicated he didn't like cats, and believe it or not, yes, we have 2 cats in our home too!  So I went on to tell Mary that I really wanted another small dog, like Carter, because they were so easy to take care of.  Mary then mentioned she had a little one named LuLu, who was 8 years old and needed a forever home, and she would have the foster parents send me a picture.
LuLu
Of course, my husband and I fell in love with her picture and just had to have her.  We were informed she had some neurological problems and walked a little funny, but wasn't on any medication.  We decided, that didn't sound so bad so we told Mary we would take her and arranged to meet her foster parents for the hand off in Illinois.

LuLu is a very quiet little dog who likes to lay around a lot just watching everything going on.  At first, when I would get home from work LuLu wouldn't even acknowledge me, now she turns her little head or will even stand up when I come in their room.  Of course, the other four are just jumping for joy, but our little LuLu doesn't have the strength.
LuLu gets along very well with all four of her sisters and brothers even though they walk all over her at times.  Our nickname for her is LuLu Bug, because she is only 4 pounds 4 ounces.  When it is warmer we take LuLu outside and can tell she loves it.  She just takes off running with her funny little gait and then waits for me to come pick her up and take her back in.  Yes, I baby her a lot and she certainly deserves to be babied a lot!  She is a joy to have and we feel
very fortunate and proud to be given the opportunity to take care of this special little girl who has touched our hearts in a big way.

I can't thank Mary enough for all the great work she does by rescuing these dogs and allowing us to adopt four of these special little dogs. They are each different in many ways but they all bring so much joy to John and I.  Thank you Mary and Northcentral Maltese Rescue for everything you do.  You truly make a difference!

Ed. note: You make a difference, too, Karen and John!
