In 2006, we rescued Lucky, the sweetest little Maltese boy in the world. He came to us with the middle name “Sisu”. I learned that “Sisu is a unique Finish concept. It stands for the philosophy that what must be done will be done, regardless of what it takes. Sisu is a special strength, persistent determination, and a resolve to continue and overcome in the moment of adversity…an almost magical quality, a combination of stamina, perseverance, courage, and determination held in reserve for hard times.” I’m fairly certain Lucky needed courage in the 30 months before his rescue. It took courage to live alongside his sister Chiclet, queen of the castle and all who entered. And when he was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor on his neck last Valentine’s Day, he embodied that courage every day as if life were a big party and he just wasn’t ready to leave. As the tumor grew and his appetite and strength diminished, he never let on that he was sick or afraid. He left us today, just 2 weeks shy of his 10th birthday, and courageous to the last moment. The world was a better place while he was in it, and we are certainly better people for having known him. May we all have a bit more Sisu in our lives.
